Das Kloster Oberzell, welches 1128 durch Johannes und seinen Bruder Heinrich gegründet wurde, hatte eine wechselvolle Geschichte. Unter Abt Oswald Löchert erlebte es jedoch seine Blütezeit und der berühmte Baumeister Balthasar Neumann schuf den barocken Neubau.
1803 wurde das Kloster im Zuge der Säkularisation aufgelöst und der Besitz enteignet. 1901 erwarb die Kongregation der heiligen Kindheit Jesu das Kloster und begann mit der Wiederherstellung der Kirche.
Heute ist das Kloster Oberzell das Mutterhaus der Zeller Schwestern, einer apostolisch tätigen franziskanischen Frauengemeinschaft.
